Porsche production in Valmet Automotive's Uusikaupunki car factory 1997-2011
Updated 05.05.2011![]() Valmet Automotive, a contract manufacturer of specialty cars, is located on the southwest coast of Finland. We have twice visited the Finnish Porsche factory, and agree that the workers' commitment level there was even higher than in the Porsche factories in Germany which we have also visited many times. In 2006 Valmet factory was the 3rd best car factory in the world after Magna Steyr (they make Mercedes G-class among other cars) and BMW factory in Dingolfing that came second. So a Porsche produced in Finland is a very good thing, although it initially might sound not right for a Porsche purist. By the way, you can check where your Boxster was made by checking the 11th character in the VIN code - if it's "U" then it's made in Uusikaupunki ("S" for Stuttgart). ![]() Although some Boxsters have been produced in Germany, most of them have been Made In Finland. Uusikaupunki factory was hired in 1997 because Porsche plant in Stuttgart didn't have enough capacity to produce all the needed cars. This has happened once before in Porsche history - between 1976 and 1991 an Audi factory in Neckarsulm produced the 924 and 944 models. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In 2010 Boxster production was moved entirely to Stuttgart and the Cayman production followed in 2011. The Cayman bodies for the last 987 mk2 cars made in Stuttgart are supplied by Valmet. 981 generation replaces the 987 generation for 2012. ![]() The last Cayman R made at Valmet Automotive on May 2, 2011 Porsches produced in Finland 03.09.1997-02.05.2011: 168.477 Boxsters (986 & 987) + 59.413 Caymans = 227.890 Porsches "Made in Finland".
