Porsche 959
1987-1988![]() 959 is probably the greatest Porsche ever in all terms and probably the best car ever produced in the world. The prototype was already introduced in 1983 - what a design with even nowadays standards! Tech specs: 2.85-litre bi-turbo 450 hp. 4WD. 3.9 seconds 0-100 km/h. Top speed 315 kmh ![]() The 959 Sport model was equipped only with the driver side exterior mirror for weight reasons. The 959 Comfort model had both mirrors. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The engine was developed according to the Class B sporting rules. Based on the handicap factor of 1.4 that applied here for turbo engines, the displacement was specified at 2849.5 cc, in order to be eligible to line up in the 4-litre class. The reduced displacement compared with the Porsche 911 turbo 3.3 was more than compensated for by the use of two identically sized turbochargers arranged in series. The first turbocharger is in operation throughout the entire engine speed range. The difficult space conditions prevalent in the four-valves per cylinder technology not only require water cooling, but also renders the use of spark plugs with smaller diameters necessary. The forged titanium conrods are fully polished and the seven-bearing steel crankshaft is gas nitrated. ![]() 1985 Pharaoh Rally, October 10-19, Egypt. 390 hp, 1185 kg. Porsche used the intended bi-turbo engine for the first time (the 911 aspiration engine was still installed in the 959 for the Paris-Dakar Rally in January 1985). Saeed Al Hajri and John Spiller won the Pharaoh Rally with this 959. ![]() 1986 Paris-Dakar Rallye, January 1-22: 400 hp, 1260 kg. In 1986 Porsche repeated its 1984 Paris-Dakar victory. Owing to the lower petrol quality, the engine performance was reduced to 400 hp. Photos (c) Porsche AG |
