Porsche 918 RSR concept
Updated 17.09.2011 On sale: we guess 2013 (as a Spyder?) ![]() Powerplant: 3.4(?)V8 with 414kW (@ 10.300 rpm!) + 2 electric motors with total of 150 kW (total power 564kW) Gearbox: 6-speed racing gearbox 918 RSR looks like 918 Spyder, but the powerplant concept is more close to the 911 997 GT3 R Hybrid racing car than 918 Spyder. Instead of a passenger seat, the flywheel accumulator is positioned there. This flywheel accumulator is an electric motor whose rotor rotates at up to 36.000 rpm to store rotation energy. Charging occurs when the two electric motors on the front axle reverse their function during braking processes and operate as generators. At the push of a button, the pilot is able to call up the energy stored in the charged flywheel accumulator and use it during acceleration or overtaking manoeuvres. The flywheel is braked electromagnetically in this case in order to additionally supply up to 150 kW from its kinetic energy to the electric motors on the front axle. This additional power is available for around 8 seconds when the system is fully charged. Although the 918 RSR can be clearly recognised as an experimental racing laboratory, surely the 918 street car will be the side or even main product of this study. ![]() Porsche CEO Mathias Müller unveiled the 918 RSR at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit on January 10, 2011. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Racing slicks ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The name of the exterior colour is "Liquid metal chrome blue" ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The 918 RSR concept shows both the elements of the 918 street car and racing car ![]() ![]() ![]() What we think Design and technology are 10 of 10. This 918 concept car is confusing - it has the elements of both the racing car and the street car. The 918 RSR concept is not a full race car and it defenetely isn't a street car yet. But we are sure, after the 918 Spyder and 918 RSR concept cars comes a 918 street legal production car. Photos (c) Porsche AG |
