The event

As most of the participants had arrived in Pärnu already a day or two before the event, we had an optional gathering at 19 o'clock on Friday, August 5. The cars were taped with sponsor decals to save time on Saturday morning and this way to have more track time.

Gran Turismo Events is a Swedish company specializing in making high class sportscar events for high class people... Big brother is generous and is helping younger brother to have better prizes for winners to make the events more serious. This year they presented a Gran Turismo Polonia 2012 participation to one of the podium places. Thank you, Peter and Jens!

Last year's winner Roul-the-Viper-man, and his company are the sponsors this year. So if you need to fix something, you will find the materials and tools from Baltic Bolt. Thank you, Roul for helping us!

With only hand throttling and hand braking (and hand steering when there's time for that), Markku is still relatively quick around the race track - 26 drivers had to admit their legs don't help them to be better than Markku.

In 1985 Porsche released a 944 Turbo, a car that was better than a 911. At that time the company just made the best cars, they didn't think like today that the 911 has to be kept artificially the best. Although we prefer original factory look, the 944 was not produced with bigger wheels than 16". To unleash the potential of a 951 you need at least 17" wheels (18" in this case).

The traffic is so heavy like there was a man-to-man race going on. Still, for the safety reason, we would never make a man-to-man race with street cars. Everybody is driving only against the clock. During one session 8-10 cars are allowed on the track with spaces between them (at least the spaces were set when the 7-lap session started).

What now? Learning to drive a 911 on a race track takes at least a year. 911's behaviour on the limit is totally different from other cars. It takes time to make your 911 understand who is the boss and who decides where to go.

Because of the rain we had to end the event before the planned time. That is one of the benefits of amateur racing that you don't have to drive in rain. Driving in rain is not fun and we are not focused on things "not fun". Fortunately everyone had had a dry driving session, so the results are fair.

The scheduled dinner together with the awards ceremony was at 9 pm.

Hannu is on podium fifth year in a row! He takes home the award from Balti Bolt, an Ampro tool wagon with 135 tools.

Since 2009 we have the tradition to find out the Best Racing Country and for that we take 5 best drivers from each country and calculate the average time of these drivers. In 2009 Finns won Estonians averagely by 1.430 seconds (1:01,441 vs. 1:02,871), in 2010 by 0.433 seconds (1:01,522 vs. 1:01,955) and this year by only 0.343 seconds (1:00,976 vs. 1:01,319). To win that cup, Estonians really have to join their forces - to bring some cars back from Nürburg for a start... ;-)

Photo (c) Deniss Podnebess
Best Racing Country Challenge cup supposed to change hands every year. Finns had other plans with it - they wanted to keep it, so they take it back to Finland every year. Fastest Finns this year (from right to left): Juha V., Hannu, Heikki, Matti K., Hugo.

As this was the 5th year of an event of this kind, it was kind of an anniversary and the participants that had participated during all these years, received a thank-you-letter. Surpisingly there were as much as 9 drivers that had joined the event on 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. They were: Guy (FIN), Hannu (FIN), Heikki (FIN), Hugo (FIN), Juha M. (FIN), Pekka H. (FIN), Rauno (FIN/EST), Tarmo (EST) and Ülari (EST).

Our greatest participant and driver, Hannu, had a 59th birthday, so we congratulated him on that. In he early years Hannu was the main force pushing to organize this event again and again. Without his supporting words, the event have had probably died after the second year or so because the enormous amount of time it takes to organize it professionally. Organizing the event has now become a routine and is therefore simpler now, although it takes more time every year as the event grows more professional every year. 300-400 working hours have been spent in making this event (October 2010-August 2011).

In the middle, Martins, the lottery award winner. Martins went home with a set of Michelin tyres from Kummimees.

Sunday, August 7 - we made photos of the top 3 drivers and the best country team. The problem was that Finns had to leave to a ferry and Roul hadn't arrived. Luckily Roul had parked his car last evening the way that we could use it for photoshooting. Our photographer Deniss Podnebess put a tripod up and made the photo with Finns and then when Roul arrived, made a photo of Roul and melted these two shots together for the winners photo that we needed. The cars are in wrong order, starting with the slower one not with the faster one, but we will not Photoshop that!

Best Racing Country team FINLAND: Juha V. (993 Turbo), Hannu (996 GT3 CS mk1), Heikki (996 GT3 CS mk2), Matti K. (996 GT3 CS mk2 with Ruf front), Hugo (996 GT3 mk2 Manthey)

2011 event conclusion:
1. The best cars were made in 1997 (Roul's Viper, Juha's 911 Turbo).
2. 996 GT3 is at least as good as 997 GT3 (even better based on the results).
3. Ander is using forces from space (it is even theoretically not possible to drive a Boxster that fast). Guys at Weissach would possibly want to buy back the car to see what Ander has done with it.

This year's prizes were as follows:
1st place

Value ~2000 EUR
2nd place

Value ~2200 EUR
3rd place

Value ~1100 EUR
Lottery award

Value ~2000 EUR
The awards were given in a system that a winner picked his award first (Roul took the tyres), then second place (Juha took the Gran Turismo event) and the third place received what was left (Hannu got the tool wagon). Lottery was drawn between 4th and last place drivers. Little Isabel was The Fortuna and the prize went to Martins from Latvia.
