Today the factory is called Magna-Steyr and it makes automobiles for different car companies. The founders of AMG in 1967 were former Mercedes engineers Hans Werner Aufrect and Erhard Melcher, who started their company in Grossaspach, Germany (30 km south of Stuttgart). Its initial title was “Engineering office for the Design and Testing of Racing Engines”. In early 80's Melcher left the company. In 1983 AMG started tuning Mercedes vehicles.
