They sold Singer cars and prepared cars for hillclimb and racing. Martin raced them at Aston Hill near Aston Clinton. They soon decided to make their own vehicles. The first car to be named Aston Martin was created in 1915 by Martin by fitting a Coventry-Simplex engine to the chassis of a 1908 Isotta-Fraschini. Production could not start because of the outbreak of the World War. After the war a new car was designed to carry the Aston Martin name. Bamford left in 1920. In 1928 Aston Martin entered the Le Mans 24H race for the first time. In 1947 David Brown ("DB") bought Aston Martin. Between eighties and 2007 the company changes hands three times. In 2004 DB9 goes into production. DB9 is built using mainly aluminium. Thanks to the front-mid position of the engine and the rear-mid position of the gearbox, the weight distribution is perfect 50:50. Between the engine and the gearbox is the aluminium torque tube that houses a carbon fibre propeller shaft! The so-called swan-wing doors open out and up, improving access and reducing the danger of the doors scuffing on high kerbs. In 2006 just the 30.000th Aston Martin built was celebrated (an average of 300 cars a year during the existence of the company).
